The first three members were baptized in 1972 and the conference was organized in 1980. The conference is divided into five districts, and is a member of the Mennonite World Conference.

In 1968, Mennonite missionaries from Eastern Mennonite Missions and Washington-Franklin Mennonite Conference arrived in Guatemala and began work that produced the Evangelical Mennonite Church of Guatemala, which is located in Guatemala City.[2]
