The Convention was formed in 1974 as a result of efforts of missionaries from Rosedale (Ohio) Mennonite Missions (Conservative Mennonite Conference) that began more than a decade earlier. The mission staff initially carried out community development projects and translated the Bible into an indigenous language. Under local Costa Rican leadership, the church grew and expanded to 26 congregations with about 1,475 members. Nine of the congregations are in metropolitan areas such as Puerto Viejo, Heredia, and Canalete de Upala; the others are in rural settings.[3]
